I went to drop off a rent check today and saw this guy as my travel companionI, Shelby Turner, and I were driving us away from my landlords’ office. I shouted out, “Hey, you’re that guy who’s going to be on my radio program tonight!”

After a car-to-car talk, he asked if I could do him a favor and take a photo of him, his dog, and his truck with downtown Seattle and the Columbia building (including it’s adjacent buildings) in the background. We were on the street east of the Safeco Field™ parking lot®.

The photo never happened but instead he told us a story of why he does this thing he does, which is travel internationally and let people play the Piano that sits in the back of his truck. He made it clear that this was an experience and not a weird form of busking or having to do with feeding his ego. He speaks fast, he’s stoked to talk to you, he plays the piano well, he’s also stoked about what he’s been doing for a very long time.

I don’t remember if he said that he’s been doing this for 5 or 11 years. One of those two.

While Shelby and I were conversing with him, he told us to get in the back of the truck, play the piano, and he took photos of us doing so. I don’t play the piano but that’s okay. Shelby doesn’t either- we just play it. The piano man told us about how he wants and gets people to play the piano. It’s a cool secret you can hear if…

Last Month, I went on a small tour through Iceland and Paris playing a handful of shows, mostly in the band Just Another Snake Cult. The trip was overall great and reinvigorating and I took several hours of field recordings most of which are audio diaries. These have yet been screened.

Tonight on Hollow Earth Radio, we will be inviting you, the listener, to come into the studio and share stories, play spooky music and honor your dead over the air. There will be healthy snacks and good vibes.

Bring your own candles to honor your dead over the air. There will be a few candles at the space. This is a celebration that occurs on November 1st and 2nd but we’ll be doing it on October 31st ahead of time. This in no way is meant to be taken as a Catholic holiday as it traditionally is. This is about honoring and celebrating those who you have lost in life.

This is the last Late Nights for the Longing for three weeks. Garrett will be taking over the show on the 17th but I’m unsure yet as to what the other two days will be when I’m gone.

I will be in Iceland and Paris from the 10th - 26th on [unpaid] sabbatical from life and will be back to host the program in the studio on the 1st (there might be an in-studio on that date too?). What may happen, is while I’m field recording music on my trip, I might upload that audio and have it programmed into my time-slot by DJ Corner Pocket.

We’ll see.

My house that I frequently broadcast from is called the Funny Button. Last Thursday we hosted a festival called FUNNY BUTTON FEST, which was also the tour-kickoff show for Mega Bog + Kusikia on their United States tour.

This reminded me that I’ve recorded a lot of shows here at the house, where we’ll be broadcasting from tonight at 10pm. The above photo is when the house hosted Bad Fate, Calvin Johnson, King Tears Bat Trip and Mega Bog. Tonight we will be broadcasting the following recordings (not in order):

Tonight on Late Nights for the Longing we’ll be playing a lot of Electronica / dance music. It’s inspired by the above photo of last week when I helped with a show of mostly textural electronic artists. Not at all inspired by who played but inspired by the manual that came with a missing Melodica that, I guess, is also called a Pianaica? Don’t ask me why.

The program tonight will not be entirely electronic. 1st hour will be mostly that. 2nd- who knows!?! It’ll be nuts!

Tonight on Late Nights for the Longing we have a very special free and open to the public in-studio. Somewhat recently (as in several months ago), cool / doing a good job label, Hardly Art, decided to release a record for a band called Seapony. They’re kind of couples-pop but most folks say Dream-pop or something like that. The band has been related to the band Tigertrap.

The other band performing is bitpart who two cool cats from France. They’ve been residing in the Pacific Northwest (mostly in Olympia) for the past four or five months and will be leaving soon to go back home. They’ve played at the Funny Button in Seattle about three times since visiting, What the Heck? Fest in Anacortes and a few other shows in Olympia and Tacoma. They’re really good pop-punk. Will shred yr face. This evening they will be joined by really-cool drummer, Maria, of the band Seed [and I think] Margy Pepper.

July 25th, 2011 Broadcast: Xander Harris, U & Brain Fruit at HTFC

Tonight on Late Nights for the Longing, we will be broadcasting from a show at Healthy Times Fun Club, an all-ages space in Seattle. I know nothing about Xander Harris other than his name starts with an “X”, rhymes with Zander (or Hander depending on your language background).

Brain Fruit is cool though. Really cool. Imagine the most colorful sonic-textures created by two very beautiful friends. The ideal Brain Fruit experience would be to set them in the back of a mini-van, amplified by a power supply of car batteries and playing while two individuals sit in the front seat driving around Seattle in heavy rain (windshield wipers on mid-wipe).

U are/is two J’s (one backward, one proper) forming one unified shape that get on their knees to pray / worship three to four monoliths.

Everybody knows about the disaster that fell upon Japan a few months ago. The earthquake followed by the nuclear crisis on the northern end of their continent that’s poisoned the water and food in the region. It’s terrible.

There was a wonderful get together of the community to host a benefit concert and have the money go to the guitarist of the band of DMBQ and the Boredoms, Shinji Masuko, so he can use it as aid for those in need. Line-Out also mentioned it with an excerpt. You can continue donating by sending money via PayPal to dmbq@dmbq.net.

Tonight I’ll be playing each set from the benefit show.

Last week I didn’t write about the program because I thought it was going to be a pretty basic show. Turns out I became mighty upset about the disparity that:

MOST BANDS ARE COMPRISED ENTIRELY OF DUDES, GUYS, BROS, WHAT HAVE YOU

Even within a community that is semi-conscious of this, there needs to be more encouragement for ladies, womyn, queer, trans individuals to have a band.

STOP WATCHING YOUR BOYFRIEND PLAY MUSIC- DUMP HIM AND START A BAND

So, without announcing it over the internet, Late Nights for the Longing is going to set for itself a standard of playing more music female-bodied, queer, trans, awesome individuals. Not exclusively BUT the goal is to make notice a more diverse and well-rounded variety of music for our listeners (which is you, silly).

Anyway, that trend is continuing. I’m also going to make a point to play more music from Canada, because our neighboring country (if you’re in/around America) is exploding with amazing music.

Crystal from My Friend Wallis has a band that she just sent her recordings of. It’s called DAD and it’s really cool drone-electronic-experimental-jam music. It’s wonderful.

You do know that the Kris Special are playing at our house, but what you might not know is that they rock and roll real hard. You may also not know that that guy Andrew from LAKE used to be in this band forever ago. You may also not know that this band is named after a sandwich from an old diner in Santa Clarita California.

This show will also feature the talents of cool rock groups like Spillway and Abraham. Also a one time only installment of the live magazine Seashoes #10. This one features a special guest Kenneth Piekarski in the performance of Seashoes #10 presents Zach and Kenneth in “We Love Tiki’s+”.

I had never seen Lightening Bolt before this show, and my dear friend Taylor (responsible for being a wonderful and open person three years ago) seemed like he wanted me to see them play. Well, I think he definitely wanted me to see them. He was excited, I was kind of excited because he was but as I continued to hear people talk about the loudness and insanity that is Lightening Bolt i.e. “They’re playing in that space? I can’t believe that!” (expressed as a mixture of being shocked / appalled / excited).

I still didn’t know what to expect aside from the sheer excitement that I was picking up on. It wasn’t until they started playing (not counting sound check) that I really got it. The sheer volume of friends and strangers that had come to the show was amazing. Every once in a while there will be an act that I’ll see where I’ll be interested in but I have no idea that there’s a whole slough of others who are as well.

Community convergence.

Anyway, I recorded the show and I’ll be playing the sets from Planets, Fexions, and Lightening Bolt

Cool?
