Mar 29th, 2010 Broadcast: Growing Up

My Gramma Pie, sister, and I are very close. We’ve been more so since Grandpa Pie passed due to Alzheimer’s Disease on January 4th, 2008. My dear friend Jenn began working on a project that I think I can address as The Grown Up Project which will be / are a collection of accounts of growing up- what it means, is, and so on- over a few mediums of expression (song, interview, essay, etc). I asked Jenn if I should interview my Gramma about what it was like growing up and being a grown up; Jenn thought it to be a grand idea. What prompted this other than the project itself was a conversation I had with Gramma one rainy night walking home where she said, “I think you and your sister are the first cultured Piekarski’s”
A bit of backstory on my Gramma (Joanie L Piekarski) growing up: Her and my Grandpa Pie (Kenneth Irving Piekarski) produced my Uncle David when she was 16 or 17, Aunt Kathy a bit later, then finally my father, Lee (although that is his middle name, his first is actually Kenneth and to by relatives and old family friends he is referred to as Tiger ). While the rest of the country was having a hay-day with their sexual revolution and whatnots, she was raising three kids, taking care of Grandpa, not getting high and listening to the Velvet Underground… on a farm.
So… Tonight, I will be interviewing my Gramma about what it was like becoming a “grown up” and what that means to her and what it was like when the rest of the world was doing it’s thing. I’ll also be reading an incomplete draft of what I have composed on the topic for Jenn.
Love,
